CHAPTER FOUR

TODAY’S AIR FORCE

To accomplish its mission, the United States Air Force uses an astounding array of weapons and equipment. These range from advanced fighter aircraft and radar systems to computers and space satellites. The USAF operates almost fifty kinds of aircraft alone. Some of the most awe-inspiring are its stealth fighters and bombers.

A large slice of the success in the Gulf War can be given to the stealth F-117 Night Hawk attack aircraft. The Night Hawk featured a special design and technology that made it almost invisible to enemy radar. This allowed it to easily slip behind enemy lines. The F-117 was equipped with highly accurate smart bombs that improved accuracy and reduced civilian casualties. A wing of ten F-117s dropped the very first bombs on Baghdad during the first Gulf War.
